Video - InEight Estimate - Trench Calculator

TRANSCRIPT

The Trench Calculator allows you to quickly calculate trench, pipe and bedding values. For example, you can perform pipe related takeoffs by defining the details of the trench or pipe. From this information, the Trench Calculator can automatically calculate total excavation volume, total pipe to purchase, lift volume, and lift weight. For this example, in the CBS register, create a new cost item from the bottom row of your CBS and call it "24 inch Pipe."

Next, add three subordinates and name them: Excavate Trench with a unit of measure of cubic yards. Install Pipe with a unit of measure of linear feet. And Backfill Trench with a unit of measure of cubic yards. Let's first open Excavate Trench and add some resources.

Add a resource of LL2 - Laborer, L02 - Operator Class 2, and EX245 - Excavator each with a quantity of 1. On the Production tab, adjust the Production to 100 cubic yards per hour. From the Actions tab, select Trench Calculator. On the Trench tab, let's enter some information.

For trench length type 1000 feet. For trench width type 4 feet. Enter a trench depth of 10 feet. Enter a hinge elevation of 5 feet and enter a back slope of 45 degrees.

Define the material swell shrinkage factor at 0.1. Now you have a view of what the trench would look like, and you can select either a neat line total volume, or include a swell shrinkage. In this example, you'll select the Total Excavated Volume, including Swell Shrinkage checkbox since this cost item is measured in feet. You can save this trench calculator by clicking Save Configuration To Library.

Save it as "trench example", then click OK. Click OK to close the calculator. The forecast takeoff quantity is now updated based on what you took off in the Trench Calculator. Click OK to close the record.

Let's say that based off manual calculations, you forecast you need 1000 linear feet of pipe, so enter 1000 for the installed pipe quantity. You want to confirm this, using the Trench Calculator. Open the Install Pipe cost item, and from the Actions tab, select Trench Calculator. Click on Load Configuration From Library and select the Trench Example you created on the previous cost item.

Then click OK. On the Pipe tab, enter 26 for the pipe exterior diameter. For the pipe center elevation from bottom, enter 19 inches and enter 10% for the waste factor. In the Results section, open the Selection register and select the MPP24 Pipe material.

Then click OK. Save the configuration to the library again, and click OK. Then click Yes to override the existing example. Finally, click OK to close the calculator.

Back on the cost item record for Install Pipe, you can add additional resources for performing the work. Add the C Pipe resource assembly, and on the Production tab, enter 300 linear feet per day. Click OK to close the cost item. You can also use the Trench Calculator to figure out how much bedding material you need for backfilling your trench.

On your backfill trench cost item, adjust the Forecast Quantity to 2300 cubic yards based on manual calculations you already worked out. Open the Backfill Trench cost item record. Add the C Pipe Crew and enter 160 cubic yards per day on the Production tab. From the Actions tab, select the Trench Calculator and load the Trench example again from the library.

On the Trench Calculator, select the Beddings tab. On the Beddings tab, you can define up to four beddings to backfill the trench. For Bedding Lift 1, enter six inches for the elevation, 5% additional material to compensate for compaction and a conversion factor of 1.6. For the material resource in tons, select MASAND.

For Bedding Lift 2, enter 38 for the elevation, five for the additional material, and 1.7 for the conversion factor. For the material, select the fine aggregate from the Installed Material tab. Then click OK.

For Bedding Lift 3, enter 76 for the elevation, five for the additional material, and 1.6 for the conversion factor. For the material and tons, select the course aggregate, then click OK. With your beddings defined click OK to close the calculator.

Notice that your bedding materials are employed on your backfilled trench cost item with the quantities you took off in the Trench Calculator.
