Claim in InEight Control

project controls manager on the phone
Use Case
  • For the project management hours performed that week, the project controls manager claims quantities directly at the budget level (instead of in the field).

  • The project controls manager also gets an updated Excel file from the superintendent for materials and indirects claimed that week (since the aren’t tracked in their timesheet system).

  • The project controls manager imports them into the Cost Breakdown Structure.

Claiming Options

In order to view earned value metrics, you’ll need up-to-date values reflected in your current budget, current estimate, and project forecast.  To keep these values current, quantities, man-hours, and costs can be brought into InEight Control through several different methods.  You may find that you alternate between some of these methods based on your specific needs.  Review the workflow below to see how these values can be brought into Control.

Claim Quantities in Control

Not all quantities are required to be claimed within InEight Plan, which is mostly reserved for progressing direct labor or subcontracts. For cost items that don’t need to be broken down into components or tracked on daily plans, you can claim directly in InEight Control, viewing progress side by side with your budget.

Ideas on Site

Actual quantities completed are required for all terminal cost items in order to drive earned value and accurately calculate automated forecast methods. Your project team should have a plan for how, who and when quantities will be claimed for cost items not being progressed through InEight Plan and Progress.

To enable claiming in Plan and Progress, deselect Hide in Plan, Progress, and Design for the cost item in InEight Control.

Another option is to set up a claiming template at the beginning of the job that you can claim against through the Claim multiple CBS quantities feature. This template should include all terminal cost items that need to be claimed directly in Control on a weekly or monthly basis.

The steps below walk through how to set up and use a template for claiming multiple quantities.

Step 1

From within InEight Control, select Actions > Claim multiple CBS quantities.

Claim Hours and Costs in Control

You will likely track hours and associate costs separately from quantities, so they can be sent through payroll processing.

  • Once you have current actuals processed through your payroll/ERP system, if your company doesn’t have a direct integration from ERP to Control, you can update Control via Excel import.

  • You can also manually enter hours and costs into Control if needed (e.g., for one-off adjustments).

Import Hours and Costs via Excel

If your organization is not using a direct integration with your ERP, you can export costs and hours from your ERP to Excel. Assuming the exported data is in the proper format, you can then import the actual costs and hours into InEight Control via Excel import.

For import, you will typically use the following columns in the Excel template:
